Chapter Fourteen

The Butters had left Hettie and Tilly’s supper outside the door to their room, with a note to say that they’d been called to a meeting to discuss cricket teas for Easter Sunday. Hettie’s stomach did an unpleasant somersault at the very mention of a cricket tea. It was a rare thing for her to distance herself from food but, as Tilly dragged the bag containing their supper into the room, she had to admit that currently she couldn’t contemplate ever eating again. She was full to the very top of her long-haired tabby head, and Edward’s excellent tea had probably been a scone too far.

Tilly felt the same, and pushed the supper to one side on the table before lighting the fire. Hettie switched on the TV in time to catch the six o’clock news. The headlines were boring – fish quotas and a new flea treatment – but the ‘and finally’ centred on the death of Gilbert Truffle and featured a look back at his distinguished career, starting with archive footage of him broadcasting on one of the pirate radio boats, and moving on to his national radio work and recent foray into local radio. The cat presenting the rather scrambled obituary gave no information about how Gilbert had died; there was a brief clip of his sister tearfully singing her brother’s praises, but no mention of murder or even suspicious death.

‘That’s all a bit strange,’ said Hettie. ‘I wonder where they got the story from. I’d have thought the fact that he was murdered should have been a headline; instead we got a watered-down tribute at the end of the news.’

‘Maybe they got their information from Wilco and he didn’t want to own up to a second murder until the killer is found?’ suggested Tilly.

‘Well, one thing’s for sure: he won’t be pleased with the coverage – there was no mention of Whisker FM. I gather the use of the words “local radio” conjures up a vision of a load of would-be broadcasters making it up as they go along and misguidedly thinking that they’re much more famous than they really are.’

‘That’s a perfect description of Branston Bean and Tarquin Flapjack,’ Tilly pointed out, ‘but that pirate radio film looked interesting. I’d love to do a programme on a boat.’

‘I think you already do,’ said Hettie. ‘It seems to me that Whisker FM is starting to sink without trace. Anyway, I videoed the news in case we didn’t get back in time, so you can watch the pirate bit again whenever you want to. Now I think we should get on with the stuff we’ve learnt today, and see if we’re any further on with either murder. Let’s start with who was present in the vicinity of both murders and had opportunity and motive.’

Tilly settled on her blanket by the fire and turned to the list of suspects in her notepad, beginning with Tarquin Flapjack. ‘Tarquin was definitely on the recreation ground on Thursday evening. We
